Engsö CastleEngsö Castle is one of Sweden´s most interesting medieval castles. Engsö is mentioned in writing for the first time in 1185 but its present exterior and interior were put in place during the 1740´s by the foremost architect of that time, Carl Hårleman. Nowadays the castle is a museum and thus open to the public. You can see interiors from many different eras. The visitor can admire the famous "Engsökedjan" and hear the story of when Johan Sparre played a game of dice with the devil. Concerts and arts and crafts exhibitions. Nearby, in a former warehouse, there is an art-museum. The museum has temporary and permanent exhibitions of contemporary Swedish art. A man named Sten Sture got himself elected captain after offering free beer to 450 specially invited people. After 6 litres per person everyone agreed that Sten was a good guy and consequently elected him. The museum is housed in the brewery´s old barley warehouse. You can follow the manufacturing process from beginning to end. The museeum in Västerås Castle takes you from pre-historic times to present times with among other things gold-ornaments dated from Roman Iron-Age and findings from the Viking-era.
