Uttersberg

A place well worth visiting is Galleri Astley, 10 km south of Skinskatteberg. In the refurbished old station-house from 1897 there is a modern art gallery. Nearby, in a former warehouse, there is an art-museum. The museum has temporary and permanent exhibitions of contemporary Swedish art. There are also sculptures exhibited outdoors on the old concourse. Phone: 0222-321 20

Arboga Bryggeri- och industri-museum

The museum is situated on Skandiagatan. Arboga is famous for its beer which, according to legends, has changed history. A man named Sten Sture got himself elected captain after offering free beer to 450 specially invited people. After 6 litres per person everyone agreed that Sten was a good guy and consequently elected him. The museum is housed in the brewery´s old barley warehouse. You can follow the manufacturing process from beginning to end. Phone: 0589-142 10

Engelsbergs bruk

The Engelsberg works is a well preserved works environment from the 18th century, complete with manor house, workers quarters, smithy, stables etc. In the workshops the mechanical equipment has been preserved. Manufacturing was disbanded in the beginning of the 20th century. The iron works is one of the province´s greatest tourist attractions.

Skinnskattebergs mansion

Beautiful mansion house from the 18th century which nowadays houses Sweden´s agricultural college. Hand-painted wallpaper, woodcarvings, extensive mineral collection. Guided tour by appointment.

Kanalmuseet vid Skantzen

Located in Hallstahammar, the museum exhibits tools, works-objects, old scriptures and photographs from the long history of Strömsholms canal. A worker's house and a school interior from the turn of the century are also exhibited. There is also a beautiful little chapel on the grounds of the museum.

Arboga Heliga Trefaldighetskyrka

The church is from the 13th century and is the province´s only Fransiscan church. It has unique paintings from 1440 which depict the life of Fransiscus. The church also has Sweden´s largest brass chandeliers, which were donated to the church in 1685 and 1724.

Röda Jorden

Riddarhyttan, which is located 15 km from Skinnskatteberg, is Sweden´s oldest iron-production facility. "Röda Jorden" has received its name from the red ochre that has dissipated into the soil of the area. The earth consists mostly of iron-oxides, which gives it its red colour. With the help of the C-14 method, archaeologists have been able to determine that iron has been manufactured at this site since circa 400 BC.

Oljeön

The island is actually called Barrön but due to the fact that the worlds oldest refinery is located on the island it has been dubbed "Oil-island". Oil, paraffin, kerosene, grease and lamp-oil were manufactured at the refinery up until 1927. The refinery is of the same type that was used in America during the 1860´s and is virtually intact.
