This is where the Sture murders were committed, Gustav II Adolf was crowned here and Queen Christina abdicated here in 1654. It was Gustav Vasa who started building the castle in the 16th century. The site was carefully selected in order to be defensible. The castle was primarily built for the defence of the realm but it was also a strong indication that the power now was with the King and not the Church.
