Linnaeus´ Hammarby

Carl von Linné had Hammarby built in 1762 and it was here he held lectures in the summers, in the museum which was erected in the park in 1769. A small botanical garden is located in front of the main house and many of the plants that Linné planted still grow there. In the main house one can see the many extraordinary artefacts, which belonged to "blomsterkungen" (the flower king), exhibited.

Dannemora mines

Located 40 km north east of Uppsala, turn off at Österbybruk. The mines were probably first discovered in the middle of the 14th century. Actual mining is mentioned for the first time in 1481, when silver was mined. The Dannemora mines laid the foundation for the industrial expansion in Uppland in the 17th century. "Storrymningen", which is the largest quarry, measures an impressive 200 metres. Mining was disbanded in 1992. Mårten Triewald´s house is located in the southern part of the mining area. Triewald built the first Swedish steam engine in 1726 and it still stands there.

The spires reach 118.7 metres up into the sky, and when the sky is overcast they disappear in the clouds. The cathedral is built according to the gothic style sometime during the 13th century. The interior reflects seven centuries. There are many great men buried in the cathedral, such as Gustav Vasa, Johan III, Carl von Linné and Nathan Söderblom. Saint Erik is entombed here as well. Pilgrims came here throughout the Middle Ages to be healed. The cathedral is unique.

The Linné garden is a flourishing oasis in the middle of Uppsala. There are more than 1 300 different kinds of flowers and herbs in an eclectic mixture of colours and scents, which were collected from all corners of the globe by Linné and his disciples. Linné himself literally lived in the garden, in a yellow brick house which has been made into a museum. The garden is open all summer and if the weather is nice the café and the conservatory are open.

Old Uppsala

The three "Kungshögarna" (the royal mounds) are situated on a ridge and are visible from miles away. In the centre of each mound there is a cairn, under which the actual grave was situated on the surface of the original ridge. The dead king was burnt on a funeral pyre together with his grave gifts, which included jewellery and gold. Uppsala Castle

The castle has been the site of many dramatic events. This is where the Sture murders were committed, Gustav II Adolf was crowned here and Queen Christina abdicated here in 1654. It was Gustav Vasa who started building the castle in the 16th century. The site was carefully selected in order to be defensible. The castle was primarily built for the defence of the realm but it was also a strong indication that the power now was with the King and not the Church.
