The spires reach 118,7 metres up into the sky and when the sky is overcast they disappear in the clouds. The cathedral is built according to the gothic style sometime during the 13th century. The interior reflects seven centuries. There are many great men buried in the cathedral such as Gustav Vasa, Johan III, Carl von Linné and Nathan Söderblom. Saint Erik is entombed here as well. Pilgrims came here throughout the middle ages to be healed. The cathedral is unique.

In the centre of each mound there is a cairn, under which the actual grave was situated on the surface of the original ridge. The dead king was burnt on a funeral pyre together with his grave gifts, which included jewellery and gold .
