Nature in Ångermanland/Medelpad![]() Photos: Copyright © MittSverige Turism The nature has created a dramatic scenery in Medelpad and Ångermanland. Steep wooden-covered hills rises out of the sea. Five rivers has their deltas here. This makes a varying and beautiful scenery. The inland is covered with fir virgin forest dotted with blue lakes. The fertile riverbanks is used for agriculture. Fir is the dominating tree here together with pine. Only on the southern slopes is it possible to find hazel and limetrees. The steep hills (300 meters high) make up the high coast. The coast also includes an archipelago with steep islands. The coast becomes less dramatic after Örnsköldsvik in north Ångermanland and to the south of Sundsvall in Medelpad. The sea here is almost as sweet as in a fresh water lake. There has even been plans to seal off the Gulf of Botnia and make it to Europe's greatest fresh water reservoir. Geologically, this part is dominated by granite with the exception of Alnö that is made of limestone. The granite here is around 1,2 billion years old, which make the province stable. The land escalation is the fastest in Sweden at a rate of 8 millimetres a year. This is because of the heavy pressure of the glaciers that were about 3 kilometre thick here. The ice pushed it down 500 meters under its normal level. The climate varies from temperate at the coast to almost arctic in the inland. The winter starts in October and ends in April or the beginning of May in the inland. Many types of trees has their northern-most location here on the southern slopes of the hills.
