Baldersnäs

(20 kilometres south-east at the east side of Laxsjön)

Baldersnäs is an estate with an aura of a romantic mansion. Its history goes as far back as 1540 and it is famous for its beautiful park with rare flowers. Today, the main part of the area have been made into a national park.

Visitors have access to the whole area including the park. During the summer there is a cafeteria and a restaurant in the main building. The old port is also open to visitors. Phone: 0531-412 13

Gammelgården
Open-air museum with interesting collections and buildings from the 18th and 19th century. Demonstrations of handicraft and a 'Farmer's wedding' during the Midsummer festivities are only some of the activities this museum has to offer.

Ed

Among several interesting sights in this town is, 'Dals-Ed formation', a gravel stratum which is part of the glacier zone in the centre of Sweden.The forts from the military manoeuvres, made by Karl XII against Norway in the late 17th century, are also of interest.

Håverud

In Håverud is the famous aqueduct constructed by Nils Ericsson more than 120 years ago. Nearby the aqueduct is the Canal Museum located with its exhibitions of the construction of the Dalsland Canal.There are several other attractions in Håverud, such as handicraft for leather, china, wood, pottery and glassworks.

The Fort of Parsetjärn (Parsetjärns skans)

(road 164/166, about 8 kilometres West of Ed)

The fort was built in 1940 when the German troops invaded Norway. It was one of several forts along the railway and the roads closest to the Norwegian border. The fort was built to host a borderline-defence patrol of about 100 men.

The Giant Pots of Steneby (Jättegrytorna vid Steneby)

(road 164, about 5 km South of Billingsfors)

In the rock formations beneath Steneby church there is a number of so called giant pots, cavities, made by strongly streaming water underneath the melting masses of the inland-ice. Their size varies from a couple of centimetres in diameter and depth up to a diameter of 10 metres and a depth of about 7 metres. The area is protected as a nature reserve.

Åmål

(road 45 North)

Åmål is actually the only real city in Dalsland and it was founded by Queen Kristina in 1643. Even though the town was partly destroyed by fires several times during the centuries, have many of its old buildings survived to the present day. Worth a visit are the two old mansions, Vågmästaregården and Dalgrensgården, both from the 18th century. Also worth a visit is the Örnäs park with a small zoo and an old homestead museum. Åmål has several other museums of considerable interest :
