Sights and Attractions in Dalsland: Historical
Baldersnäs (20 kilometres south-east at the
east side of Laxsjön)
Baldersnäs is an estate with an
aura of a romantic mansion. Its history goes as far back as 1540 and it is
famous for its beautiful park with rare flowers. Today the main part of the
area has been made into a national park.
Visitors have access to the
whole area including the park. During the summer there is a cafeteria and a
restaurant in the main building. The old port is also open to visitors.
The Dalaborg Ruin (Dalaborgs ruin) (road 45,
approx. 20 km south-south-east of Mellerud)
What today is
merely a ruin was in 1304 a castle erected by the two dukes Erik and Valdemar,
sons of Magnus Ladulås who was a famous figure in Swedish history. The
castle was destroyed 130 years later during the Engelbrekt feud. What remains
today is the moat, embankments, a terrace and the cellar of a blockhouse.
Ed (road 164, 166)
Among several
interesting sights in this town is the so called 'Dals-Ed formation', a gravel
stratum which is part of the glacier zone in the centre of Sweden and the forts
from the military manoeuvres made by Karl XII against Norway in the late 17th
century.
The Håvesten burial grounds (Håvestens
gravfält) (road 172, about 1,5 km South of Färgelanda)
This burial ground is a remain from the Iron Age and the strangest of
them all in Dalsland and most certainly worth seeing. There are 10 large
mounds, 3 erected flat rocks and 6 round stone-settings. The view from the
Ättekulls mound is inspiring.
The Church of Gesäter (Gesäters kyrka)
(road 172, 15 km south-south-west of Ed)
Medieval art is
quite uncommon in Dalsland but the one piece there is, is very interesting. In
the Church of Gesäter one can see the Gesäter Madonna, an 80 cm tall
wooden work of art. It is dated as far back as to the 13th century.
During the centuries it has been quite badly treated. For some time it
was even used as chopping-block. In Gäserud there is also one of the
oldest profane buildings in Dalsland, the Gäserud cabin from the 17th
century.

in Dalsland. It is an area of 6 000 sq. metres with rock carvings from the
Bronze Age. There are over 300 amazing carving-areas with pictures of hands,
