Theater, Opera & Ballet

Sweden has a great and lively theater life. The most prestigious Swedish theater is the Royal Dramatic Theater in Stockholm with its four separate scenes. The Court Theater at Drottningholm palace (the home of the Royal family) was founded by King Gustav III in 1766. It is still used today in the summertime, although many theaters are closed in the summer, with ballet and opera performances.

There are also a number of amateur theater groups, of which most are linked to adult educational associations. There are several regional and local theaters, which can be found in all parts of the country. The National Swedish Touring Theater is a mobile theater serving the whole country. In the summer, when most 'indoor' theaters are closed, open-air theaters reach a large audience. The people acting are both amateurs and professionals. They often play well-known dramas or plays based on local historical events.
